What do the FBI and Best Buy have in common?

When it comes to your service provider, integrity weighs heavily on what option you choose is best for your small business. This ranges from structural integrity, technological integrity, and service provider-client integrity. Running your small business, you don’t have time to worry about whether or not you trust your service provider or whether or not your systems will fail or if your clients are protected under the system your provider supplies.

Nearly a decade ago, one of the largest big-box electronic retailers was caught in a scandal including the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI decided to home in on pedophiles and sex offenders by bribing Best Buy’s Geek Squad employees—technological and computer support team—with small amounts of money for their service in hunting down customers.

For a small $500 to $1000, the Geek Squad employee—renamed CHS (confidential human sources) to attempt to avoid being tied to the Geek Squad—would search customer’s computers for child pornography. Although the possession of such content is illegal, it not only ruins the trust between the company and the customer, but it also offended the customers Fourth Amendment right.

The Fourth Amendment states that a person is safe from unreasonable searches, seizures, and are secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects unless probable cause and a warrant is provided. Selling yourself to hack peoples’ computers creates an unsavory feeling towards those who are bought out, but It shouldn’t be like that.

In the past, the FBI has created stings where clicking on the wrong hyperlink shown up on your screen could land you in prison, similar to how the credit card owner would be sent to prison if a hacker stole your car information to buy child porn. That said, even when acquitted, the conviction of the court in the public eye has the potential to ruin lives, careers, and relationships. Even viruses, malware, and spyware can be coded to program your computer to visit these sites or download this kind of content under your nose while storing them in hidden folders.
