Politics in Communication: Net Neutrality, Small ISP’s, and Computer Fellows

What does the repeal of Net Neutrality actually do to ISP’s?

The repeal has the potential to prioritize communications traffic from customer to customer and implement a paywall. This allows the ISP to grant access to more services and at a faster speed to those who are willing or able to pay. Most small business don’t always have the income to pay for what would now be deemed a luxury giving small ISP’s an advantage through less competition with large corporations.

How small businesses may be affected:

With the FCC’s decision to repeal Obama’s 2015 order to equalize the internet, some businesses may see a reduction in internet speed.

That said, it isn’t a change anyone would see overnight. Most or all customers of small ISP’s won’t see much of a difference in their connectivity as the competition between fast lanes and traffic prioritization will mainly affect larger corporations.

The good news? Small ISP’s and IT Telecom businesses may see an exodus from large corporation internet service providers as customers of these big corps. attempt to find a smaller, comparable ISP.

In some cases, big corporations/ISP’s will avoid certain areas for fear of a lack of return on investment creating a no-compete zone for small ISP’s to jump in. For small businesses, this is a boon allowing small IT and ISP firms to provide connection and service to those who would otherwise be marooned.
